In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Katz emphasised, “I have declared UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres as persona non grata and barred him from entering Israel due to his failure to condemn Iran’s missile attack on Israel, as well as his antisemitic and anti-Israel conduct. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz reiterated on Sunday that U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is now considered persona non grata in Israel due to his failure to condemn Iran’s recent missile attack and what Katz described as antisemitic and anti-Israel conduct.

A poll found that 87% of the Israeli public supports this decision. Guterres can continue seeking support from UN member states, but the decision will not change.”

This declaration follows an incident on October 1, when Iran launched over 180 ballistic missiles towards Israel amid rising tensions with Hezbollah, its proxy in Lebanon. While many of the missiles were intercepted, some managed to breach Israel’s missile defense systems, escalating the conflict.

Katz had previously stated on October 2 that Guterres’s lack of a clear and unequivocal condemnation of the missile strikes influenced the decision to bar him from entering the country.
