The Pistons had signed Monty Williams as their HC in the 2023 offseason. Williams was coming off a 64-win season with the Suns and an NBA Finals appearance in 2021-22. The Detroit side brought the veteran in the hope of turning things around in a historic $78.5 million deal. However, his coaching success didn’t carry over to the Pistons, suffering a 28-game losing streak. Reports suggest that he often appeared disinterested, and youngsters like Ausar Thompson, Jalen Duren, and Jaden Ivey’s development took a hit too.
Following the disastrous season, the Pistons decided to part ways with Williams. Given his overall history, he was linked with many jobs in the NBA, with one of them reportedly being the LA Lakers, who considered him as one of the candidates but eventually hired JJ Redick. Now, news has come via Chris Haynes that the 2022 Coach of the Year has taken the role of HC at a high school.
“Sources: Former Pelicans, Suns, Pistons coach Monty Williams has accepted the head coaching job at TMI Episcopal prep school in San Antonio where he will coach his son Elijah.” Williams has taken the role at TMI Episcopal where he will be coaching his son Elijah, who is considered an elite prospect. The young gun is ranked as the 11th-best high school prospect in the country and also ranked as the #4 small forward by Rivals!

Monty Williams will be replacing Bruce Bowen in the hoops program. An interesting thing to notice is that Monty will also be coaching the kids of a couple of other former San Antonio Spurs players as well. He’ll coach Bruce Bowen’s two sons, Ozmel and Ojani, and Tim Duncan’s son Dra- all of them play for the Panthers. Interestingly, one of Williams’ sons will graduate in 2029, so it’s quite likely that he’ll coach the team through the entirety of Micah’s high school stint too!

You must be wondering how that’s possible. Well, the historic deal Monty Williams signed with the Pistons worth $78.5 million over six years is still paying dividends to the 2022 Coach of the Year. At the time, this was the highest coaching contract in the NBA. Then, the Pistons finished the season with an abysmal 14-68 record and decided to cut Williams the very next season. However, this meant he was still owed money for the remainder of his contract in Detroit.

The sum was $67.5 million which the Pistons will still pay Williams, a record amount for ‘dead money’ as well. This is what the team’s owner, Tom Gores said, “Decisions like these are difficult to make, and I want to thank Monty for his hard work and dedication.”

On the other hand, TMI Episcopal rejoiced after their premium hiring and posted on social media, “We are excited to announce that Monty Williams will be our new Head Coach for the Boys’ Basketball Team.”
Ultimately, this means Monty Williams will still be getting paid a huge sum while realizing the dream job of coaching his very own sons. What are your thoughts on him leaving the NBA and coaching at his son’s high school? Let us know in the comments.
