The New Orleans Saints are open for business if teams make the right offers.
“You ask questions, and you have the right to ask the question, but you know, listen: Everybody is tradable, it just depends on the offer that you get,” general manager Mickey Loomis told reporters Tuesday. “And yet, that’s not very common. … I don’t like trading players that have been contributors for us.
“… There’s too many ‘what if’ things here. If there was something imminent, well, I still wouldn’t tell you.”
As Luke Johnson of NOLA.com noted, the comments came in response to a question about Marshon Lattimore’s status with the team.
The Saints restructured the cornerback’s contract in December by converting the base salary to an option bonus instead of a standard bonus, which means any team that trades for him would be responsible for paying that option. That would, in turn, make it less of a financial hit for New Orleans.
It is the exact move the Green Bay Packers did with Aaron Rodgers before they traded him to the New York Jets.
What’s more, ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler reported in March that “several teams” believe the veteran cornerback is available.
It would still be rather surprising to see the Saints trade Lattimore considering he is under contract through the 2026 campaign and has been a defensive leader for the franchise since he was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft.
His resume includes a Defensive Rookie of the Year and four Pro Bowl appearances, although injuries limited him to seven games in 2022 and 10 games last year.
When healthy, the Ohio State product can be one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Perhaps that will entice another team to trade for him, but he remains a member of the Saints for now.
